Ordering Turbo or Locker Storage

In order to order either new Turbo or Locker storage you need to visit ITS Service Request System (SRS).

Once you have clicked on that link you can follow these steps to order storage:

  • Select Request Service at the top of the screen.
  • Select either Locker Storage or Turbo Storage from the Category list
  • Chose the type of storage you need, either NFS of CIFS
  • Once you’ve chosen your storage type (Locker or Turbo and NFS or CIFS) you will be taken to a series of pages that you will need to fill out. Click Next to move through each page.
  • Once all pages have been filled out you will be taken to a Review page. Here you can verify all of your information is correct before submitting your request.
  • After reviewing all your information to ensure it is correct click Submit Now to submit the request for a new volume.
  • The changes will be sent to the ARC Storage team so they can process the request. This can take up to a business day to complete. They will update you as soon as the changes have taken effect.

The following drop-downs provide assistance with each field for the order forms to request either a Turbo or Locker volume.

For all examples, PI stands for the uniqname of the primary investigator for the project.

Selections that are specific to either NFS or CIFS are indicated with that prefix in the section title. All other fields apply to both.

NFS - Numeric User ID

  • This field is for the numeric user id (UID) of the requesting user.

The requester needs to be the PI. You can find your UID by running the ‘id’ command on one of our HPC clusters such as Great Lakes. If you do not have access to one of our clusters to do so please contact your unit support team or arcts-support@umich.edu for assistance.

Owner MCommunity Group

  • This is an email group that is used for notifications for maintenances, outages and other information about any storage service.
  • Set this to your “arcts-PI-admins” MCommunity Group.
  • If you do not have one, you will need to create one. Here are the required settings:
    • Group Name:  arcts-PI-admins
    • Group E-mail:  arcts-PI-admins
    • Members List is Viewable By:  Anyone
    • Messages Can Be Sent to the Group By:  Anyone
    • Add as owners: arcts-helpdesk, arcts-systems
    • Add as owners and members: (if your home unit is one of these schools, add the list of groups below as well as the PI’s uniqname):
      • COE:  coe-arcts-hpc-admin
      • LSA:  arc-hpc-provisioning
      • MED: rmp-umms-unit
      • SPH: sph-research-provisioning
    • Members:
      • Anyone, besides the PI, that needs to see financial data and make decisions in the PI’s behalf.

NFS - MCommunity Group ID

  • Along with a numeric UserID, we need a numeric Group ID to create your allocation.  We keep track of these numeric Group IDs in MCommunity to keep them unique and distinct.
  • A new MCommunity Group will need to be made in order to have a unique numeric Group ID. This numeric Group ID will be used to control access to your Turbo volume, and can be used on your linux machines in your department as well.
  • The group name should be named as follows: <college/unit>-<pi>-<turbo> or <college/unit>-<pi>-<project>
    • Your department or unit name is usually umms, or lsa, sph, or coe for whatever the shorthand for your college/school might be.
    • Group names should not contain spaces and have less 32 characters.
    • Ex: umms-jhallum-turbo or coe-brockp-turbo.
  • Here are the required settings for the MCommunity group:
    • Group Name: <college/unit>-<pi>-<turbo> or <college/unit>-<pi>-<locker> depending on volume type
    • Group E-mail: <college/unit>-<pi>-<turbo> or <college/unit>-<pi>-<locker> depending on volume type
    • Members List is Viewable By:  Anyone
    • Messages Can Be Sent to the Group By:  Only Members
    • Owners:  hpc-systems,arcts-helpdesk
    • Members:  The list of users to have access to the Turbo volume.

The MCommunity group now determines access to volumes on both Globus and Great Lakes. Please note that the <instance name> mentioned above is of your choosing.

You can change you user list via the ARC Resource Management Portal at https://portal.arc-ts.umich.edu  Alternatively contact us at hpc-support@umich.edu and we will adjust access accordingly.

Permitted Hosts

  • This is used for the IP address of any machine you would like the Turbo volume exported.
  • The machine must be on the U-M network to access the volume.
  • If you plan on mounting this to a unix machine in your home unit AND to the Great Lakes cluster, or other centrally available cluster,  you should ensure that the username and user id number matches the uniqname and University user id number, otherwise files may not be read in one location or the other.
  • If you are unsure as to what host name/IP address to use please contact your local unit support team or email us at arcts-support@umich.edu for assistance.

CIFS - UMROOT AD Group Name (Turbo CIFS and both Locker NFS and CIFS)

  • If you do not have one, it will need to be created for you.
  • Please reach out to your unit IT department and request one be made for you.
  • If you have any questions about this process, please contact us at arcts-support@umich.edu.
  • If you are creating a multiprotocol volume, this group name should match the MCommunity group name above (this means that the Mcommunity-AD sync process used by ITS will not work for this, as it creates AD groups with the mcomm- prefix.)

CIFS - Network Share Name

  • The name for your storage volume. This is used when you want to mount the volume (or make it accessible) to your computer.
  • If you enter nothing, it will autofill with the requester’s uniqname and a digit representing the number of the volume. If you request multiple volumes the numbers will be sequential.

Regulated and/or Sensitive

  • If your data contains regulated and/or sensitive data, this option must be selected. Not doing so would be a violation if you store your data in the volume.
  • A volume with sensitive data CANNOT be mounted on a service that hosts any unrestricted data such as Great Lakes or Lighthouse, nor should it be mounted on a machine in a lab that is not suitable for hosting restricted data.  If you don’t know if your machine is suitable for hosting restricted data, you should ask your local IT Professional in your unit, or your Unit IT Security Liaison.

NFS - Directory Name

  • The name for your storage volume. This is used when you want to mount the volume (or make it accessible) to your computer.
  • If you enter nothing, it will autofill with the requester’s uniqname and a digit representing the number of the volume. If you request multiple volumes the numbers will be sequential.

Option

  • Select the Turbo option you would like:
    • Basic:  $9.32 per terabyte per month
    • Basic with Snapshots:  $9.32 per terabyte per month
    • Basic with Replication:  $18.69 per terabyte per month
    • Basic with Replication and Snapshots:  $18.69 per terabyte per month
  • Select the Locker option you would like (Locker requires a minimum of 10TB)
    • Basic: $3.26 per terabyte per month
    • Basic with Snapshots: $3.26 per terabyte per month
    • Basic with Replication: $6.50 per terabyte per month
    • Basic with Replication and Snapshots: $ 6.50 per terabyte per month

Snapshots have no additional cost. Please be aware the snapshots take up space in your volume’s quota. For example, if you have a 10 terabyte volume the maximum amount of data you can store id 5 terabytes. The remaining 5 terabytes will be used up by snapshots.

Size

  • This is is the amount of storage you wish to allocate (in whole number Terabyte increments).  You are charged for the size of the allocation, not how much you use.  Minimum storage size is 1 terabyte (1024 gigabytes) for Turbo, and a minimum of 10 terabytes (10240 gigabytes) for Locker.

NFS - Multiprotocol (Turbo Only)

  • Select this option if you want your NFS Turbo volume to be available as a CIFS volume.  This is useful if you want to mount your Turbo volume to a local Windows or OS X machine as well as a Linux machine.

NFS - Make Available On

  • Select if you want your Locker NFS volume to be mounted on Great Lakes. Turbo NFS has more options such as Lighthouse, Globus, ThunderX (Cavium), or Great Lakes.

Shortcode

  • The first field is for the amount of Terabytes to be charged to the shortcode provided.
  • The second field should contain the shortcode that will be billed for this storage volume.
  • You have the option of entering up to 4 shortcodes for a volume. The number of Terabytes for the volume can be distributed amongst them however you choose
  • Billing for this storage volume will occur monthly on or around the 10th of every month.

Signer Uniqname

  • This field should contain the uniqname of the owner of the shortcode, usually the Principal Investigator, but some units this is the financial person for the unit.
  • This uniqname will be reflected in the billing statement for the month for that shortcode.

Billing Authority

  • This box should be checked if you have confirmation you have approval to use the shortcode from the above authorized signer.
